Large Country Cottage Garden
The location of this large cottage garden near Selby, North Yorkshire, created a beautiful backdrop for the cottage style planting. The large garden attached to the listed building was originally a blank canvas with a simple flat green lawn and laurel hedging along each side.
Where the garden boundary met with the open countryside, this formal laurel hedge was replaced with a native hederow and the existing simple timber gate retained. The native hederow is a mix of native species, predominantly hawthorn.
The clients wanted a seating and outdoor dining area by the house and so the formal garden seating area was created with coursed stone paving and simple, bold timber seats. The size of the seating area allows for table and chairs to be brought out. The pergola acts as a subtle division between the open garden and the cosy patio dining area. The pergola will also provide shade as the climbing plants grow up and across the timber frame.
The garden incorporated fruit trees within the open lawn and also a vegetable patch and fruit bushes. Compost bins were also discretely included in the garden design.
These photographs were taken just one year after planting and the growth with good maintenance has been fantastic.
