Beautiful physalis seed cases in March.

These beautiful seed heads of the physalis plant were found drifting across a client's garden today as we carried out our garden survey.

Physalis alkekengi is also known as the Chinese lantern (amongst other names) and with the right conditions can actually grow to be an invasive herbaceous perennial plant.

The plant dries out in Spring and the bright orange-red fruit is revealed within. The filigree pattern of the casement (calyx) catches the wind as is blown across the garden, taking the seed with it as a fantastic seed dispersal method.
